International - Female Genital Mutilation

The practice of Female Genital Mutilation was made illegal in the United Kingdom in 1985. Despite this, the abominable practice continues to the present day, with the first FGM Protection Order only being issued in July 2015. We all need to speak up about this act and protect those who are vulnerable from being harmed.

FGM (also known as female circumcision) is a procedure carried out in secret, often by community elders with no medical knowledge, using unsanitary household implements and with no professional aftercare. The female genital organs are cut or intentionally altered causing injury, the impact of which has both lifelong physical and psychological consequences for the victim.

FGM is common practice on both women and children in certain cultures. It is a form of abuse and there are emergency remedies that we can put in place to protect both women and children from this act.

If you believe you or your daughter are at risk we will apply on your behalf for a FGM Protection Order and will also coordinate a full care package with our support agency partners to ensure that your health, safety and wellbeing is taken care of.

The FGM Protection Order can prohibit a child being taken out of the country for the procedure and the court has the power to remove or restrict passports and travel documents.

I am really thankful for everything that Laura and Julie did for us. Laura kept us well informed and each stage of the process was explained putting our minds at ease. Our Grandchildren’s future is now secure thanks to Laura. The whole office is great. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending them.

Helen was absolutely fantastic, the case was long and difficult but Helen was there for me when I needed her on the telephone and at court. She didn’t beat about the bush and gave me constructive criticism which I appreciated. My kids are now safely home with me where they belong and they love the teddies you sent for them. It was a really lovely thought, Thank you for everything.
